Our opinion on SecurityKiss
SecurityKiss in a VPN that we have known well for a while, so it was about time we published a test of their service and explained some of the functions (Exclusive Tunnelling and Octopus Tunnelling) that are unique to them.
Originally from Ireland, SecurityKiss is often recognised for its Green package : free VPN up to 300MB/day. However their best rate is a paying one, called Emerald, which costs €9.99/month (with a lesser tariff for 6 months or a year). What do you get for the price?
Pack PPTP – L2TP – OPENVPN
Shared IPs on servers in the UK – USA – Germany – France – Switzerland – Poland – Holland – Sweden – Canada – Belgium – Italian – Ukraine – Ireland and Spain
Dedicated IPs in the USA
Possibility of sharing files on several devices
Integrated client with options
10 days of Logs
Signing up is very simple: Create Account – you can download the client straightaway to find out about it.
Once installed you can use it in its free version or even, like us, use the Emerald rate at €9.99/month.
Each downloaded client comes with a unique client ID. To sign up you just need to click on the Buy tab in the client or to go back to the site (in this case the ID number is important because it helps you create a user account).
Click on the little basket (Buy) to arrive directly on the page with the different rates with the ID saved in the browser. Very practical!
Once the payment has been made you need to go to your email as registered on your Paypal account because for security reasons that is where your connection info is sent. You only have to start up the connection programme (as an administrator) and from then on it will be linked to Emerald with no limits.
When this client ID and the password has been sent to your inbox you can connect to the client account. SecurityKiss has one of the best interfaces, a simple presentation of all the useful information in one place. Many VPNs have a tendency to overfill their client interfaces with FAQs, tutorials, devices, other tabs…
Like IPVanish, you have the usage of servers and server addresses for manual configurations for PPTP and L2TP.
You can also find all the devices supported in the Download tab (Windows, Mac, Linux, Iphone&Ipad, Android, Boxee, DD-WRT). In the screen-cap below we wanted to show you that there is even a configuration for GuizmoVPN.
Octopus Tunneling: SecurityKISS users become administrators of their own Virtual Private Networks.
We love this option! This function lets your create your own VPN (very easily) between two computers at a distance. The principle is simple: you use your VPN server as a pathway between two machines connected on the same server. So you have a local and secure network even geographically faraway. The whole illustrated explanation is here.
As a bonus you can set up Octopus Tunneling with a free client or even with a different paying user.
Don’t forget to use the same server and to accept a request for a new « forward route » only from someone you know.
Once the two clients are connected, both can use the VPN separately and benefit from a local network at the same time. The local IP is essential. That is what you will use most often and will share with the person on the same network.
Before launching the Remote Desktop or in multi-player games (LAN network) you must verify the Ping for the local addresses between the two computers. You just need a Ping on the local address which will appear on the SecurityKiss client of the other person, with whom you created a “forward route”
If the Ping doesn’t work, we suggest deactivating the firewall and trying again. If that works, then reactivate the firewall and adjust the settings for incoming and outgoing traffic for programmes that use the local network.
This way you can create multiple Forward Routes with as many clients as you like. There are many applications, the most interesting being remote desktop. SecurityKiss explains in this article the main advantages of Octopus Tunnelling.
We would like to show you a concrete example of Octopus Tunnelling’s usage. Remote desktop is ideal. With this method you can link two PCs as if they were on a local network, link them safely, take control of either of the two, chat and exchange files. The best known programme is TeamViewer though it is not our favourite. We prefer Remote Control PC which is perfectly adapted for SecurityKiss to link two PCs.
After downloading the programme Remote Control PC 6.0, you will need to install it.
Two modules are available: administrator and host. You can install both straightaway or just choose the one that suits your needs best. With Administrator, you are in control; with Host you are receiver.
We recommend installing both: Admin + Host. (Don’t forget this means total access both ways!)
Afterwards it is simple. Just click on Add Remote PC and add the local IP of the other SecurityKiss client with whom you created a “Forward Route”.
Then click on Connect.
The password of the programme installed on the other machine is obligatory.
Now there are three options:
- Full Control
- File Transfer – fantastic for filesharing
- Chat – Fun and totally confidential !
The last option with SecurityKiss. With the Emerald package you have the fight to a dedicated IP in the USA . IF you didn’t know, a dedicated IP is an IP that belongs to you, it is not dynamic or shared like 95% of VPN IPs. With a Private IP during all VPN connections you have the same public IP. This is sort of like a Private IP. SecurityKiss offers a US IP in order to fulfil the high demand of American users that need a fixed and safe address in the USA.
To get one: you need to ask the tech support. A few hours later SecurityKiss will assign you a dedicated IP (xxx xx xx xxx). But this IP won’t be Full Open Port. So you won’t be able to use it with Synology to connect from outside.
This IP will appear when you start up the integrated client. Note that this IP is still usable with the protocol PPTP.
The greatest advantage of SecurityKiss is definitely Octopus Tunnelling (available even between two free accounts). The connection programme is comprehensive. This VPN will suit a wide range of users. The cost is slightly higher than average but could balance out if you pay in Bitcoin. In this case a 50% discount on the initial price will be applicable.
