Glossary of terms associated with VPN

The following is a list of terms that are commonly found in discussions of virtual private networks (VPNs) and brief descriptions of the terms.

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network): VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. VPN provides a secure way to access network resources over the Internet or other public or private networks and allows you to connect to a remote network and become a node on that network. VPNs use tunneling, encryption, authentication, and access control over a public network at the same time for security. Although they often use public networks, VPNs inherit the characteristics of a private network, thus the "Virtual" Private Network. VPN will assign a new ip address to your computer. This is NOT to be confused with a proxy service which is used to view websites only.

  • PPTP is very simple protocol which was developed in Microsoft. Provide encryption up to 128 bit. PPTP is easiest protocol to configure and natively supported (do not require install anything) in most OS (Windows, Linux, MacOS), Apple iPod/iPad/iPhone, Windows Mobile, Android devices, Boxee Box, routers (very easily to install on DD-WRT routers) and others. PPTP use port 1723 TCP for connection and protocol GRE for tunneling, both should be open in your firewall. PPTP can be easily blocked by restricting the GRE protocol. Not recommended for China and Middle East like Oman, Dubai and UAE.

  • L2TP was developed in cooperation between Cisco and Microsoft to improve PPTP protocol. L2TP does not provide any encryption or confidentiality, it’s just tunneling protocol. It uses IPsec for encryption. L2TP uses port 1701 UDP. Provide encryption up to 256 bit.

  • SSTP is new Microsoft SSL VPN solution. It encapsulates packets over an HTTPS session, that means it is difficult to block SSTP because it’s like visit a https website (No firewall and no government has ever been able to block it: So if you’re from China, Middle East or Arabian Countries – this is what you need). SSTP works over port 443 TCP. Provide encryption up to 2048 bit and can work over proxy or firewalled connection. However only Windows and Linux support SSTP vpn, SSTP is not supported by Apple devices or Android devices.

  • OpenVPN is a free and open source software application that implements VPN solutions. It uses SSL/TLS security for encryption and is capable of traversing network address translators (NATs) and firewalls. Properly configured OpenVPN is the most stable, most encrypted (keys up to 2048 bit) and can be configured to use any port (TCP or UDP).
    The main difference between OpenVPN is you need install OpenVPN client software to use service. OpenVPN is available on Linux, MacOS and Windows as separate software. Also there are solutions for iPhone/iPad, Windows Mobile and Andoid based devices. It’s already integrated into routing firmware like DD-WRT, Tomato, Mikrotik.

  • IKEv2 is a tunneling protocol that uses the IPsec Tunnel Mode protocol over port 500 UDP. The use of IKEv2 and IPsec allows support for strong authentication and encryption methods. Support up to 256 bit encryption. Supported in Windows Vista, 7 and 8, also works for Blackberry - Nokia smartphones!. Important advantage of IKEv2 is the support of VPN Reconnect (also called Agile VPN - MOBIKE). VPN Reconnect is a feature that enables VPN connections to be maintained when a VPN client moves between wireless hotspots or switches from a wireless to a wired connection. Normally, when outages occur, the VPN tunnel terminates and the connection must be reestablished -- resulting in lost connectivity that can range from a few minutes to hours or more. Agile VPN solves those problems by providing multiple network paths between VPN tunnel connection points. Making it a good choice for mobile users who move between access points and even switch between wired and wireless connections.

  • SSH2: SSHv2 provides strong host-to-host and user authentication as well as secure encrypted communications over the Internet. SSH2 is a more secure, efficient, and portable version of SSH. Like OpenVPN, SSH2 uses the highest level of encryption - 256 bits using AES cipher and is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac. Once you have established an SSH2 tunnel you can configure certain clients to route their data through this tunnel, all other software still uses your regular, unencrypted Internet connection. There are two advantages to SSH2 tunnelling. Firstly, SSH2 will only protect the applications that you choose. And secondly, in case of disconnection the tunnel will cut all links between your applications and the internet. So your IP and ISP is always protected and your data will be safe.

  • Proxy A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server.  But what's the difference with a VPN? Proxies and VPNs are both designed to change your IP address and manipulate your Internet browsing to allow you to access YouTube, Facebook, etc. — so they will essentially unblock those restricted sites. However a proxy doesn’t natively offer encryption, which means the information you are sending and receiving may be intercepted and stolen on public Wi-Fi. There are two kinds of proxy. - How do I use a Proxy Server?
    • HTTP proxies are the most common. They let a computer use the internet as if from another computer.
    • SOCKS SOCKS proxy are used for specific applications, while giving the member the chance to leave other applications unanonymized and/or unencrypted. Many client software programs offer SOCKS5 proxy support, permitting you to change your visible, external IP Address to the IP Address of the proxy server.

  • Dynamic IP vs Static IP vs Shared IP vs Modulating IP vs Tier- There are actually 7 different kinds of ip addresses. Whats the difference between them and how can a website or network provider tell the difference?

So these IPs are shared between many users who themselves regularly change IPs, making it very difficult to find a link between a VPN IP and an ISP IP. It is a transparent process, which doesn't require you to disconnect or reconnect. This means you can download several files as a free user of a hosting service without them noticing!
    • Tier-1 VPN IP These IPs come from the network owned by the VPN. Run and administered by the VPN. Both rare and good quality. IPVanish is the uncontested leader of these IPs.

  • Split Tunneling By default a VPN secures your whole network. So if the VPN is connected on one device (PC – Laptop – Router) it applies to all programmes, apps and other machines and protects them all.   • DNS: DNS means Domain Name Service, that is a server that matches a server name with an IP address.     • By default, DNS addresses are chosen automatically.
    • Instead choose the manual configuration and fill in DNS Primary and Secondary with the server addresses of your choice.

    With Mac :

    • Open system preferences then Network.
    • Choose your internet connection in the left column (Airport=Wifi, Ethernet) then click on Advanced.
    • Select the DNS tab and in the left column you will see the currently used DNS.
    • To change them, all you need to do it click on the Plus symbol and enter the preferred server addresses.

    Why would you need to change your DNS ? With its own DNS servers, your ISP can control the sites you visit. If it wants to ban a certain website, it can just block its domain name, so if you want to access a famous torrent site and you type the address into google you will get “server not found.” However it is not totally blocked as you can also type in the IP address of the site to access it. So it is possible (though annoying) to circumvent these restrictions currently employed by several ISPs.I.

    DNS liars : When you type in an address for a non-existent site, you normally receive a standard error code (NXDOMAIN, this domain does not exist). But DNS liars instead of sending the error code lead the user to a sponsored search page proposing options for valid domains. Often these pages have already been created to profit from advertisement links on error pages.

    DNS leaks: A DNS leak happens when your request to a primary DNS happens outside the VPN. In this case your ISP knows what site you want to visit. The excellent website https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ offers a test to see if you have a DNS leak.

    What are the alternatives ? You will have worked out that in order to surf in peace without suffering filtering or DNS liars it is better to be prepared. This is why there are alternative and free DNS servers. Wikileaks provides an extensive list http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Alternative_DNS , but be careful! Research your DNS because they are not all trustworthy, some are suspected DNS liars, others are very slow. Be aware that no alternative DNS will be faster than that of your ISP. Be aware that the alternative DNS providers might have an ulterior motive.

    What about the VPN ?  You can be reassured that all VPN services are well aware of DNS problems. The best VPN providers also used alternate DNS and local DNS servers within their VPN network, as another hidden layer of protection. Finally, you can always change them if you are not satisfied with their performance or if you do not trust them.

  • TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is the most commonly used protocol on the Internet. The reason for this is because TCP offers error correction. Flow control determines when data needs to be re-sent, and stops the flow of data until previous packets are successfully transferred. When this happens, the client re-requests the packet from the server until the whole packet is complete and is identical to its original.

However, UDP is never used to send important data such as webpages, database information, etc; UDP is commonly used for streaming audio and video. Streaming media such as Windows Media audio files (.WMA) , Real Player (.RM), and others use UDP because it offers speed! The reason UDP is faster than TCP is because there is no form of flow control or error correction. The data sent over the Internet is affected by collisions, and errors will be present. Remember that UDP is only concerned with speed. This is the main reason why streaming media is not high quality.
