Best Mobile VPN apps

Along the same lines as "Easy-to-use VPN software", VPN providers have developed Mobile Apps (with the same idea of convenience) for iOS and Androïd.

The main reason to use these apps would be the ease of installation (and eventual options) unlike a manual installation which can be quite annoying on these kinds of operating systems. No technical skills or special knowledge needed to set up. Apps come preloaded with some of the hottest features

It is worth noting that the best apps (the most comprehensive) are all with Android. These have the most options. VPNs opt for the most part for the OpenVPN protocol in the Android apps. For PPTP and L2TP, you need to configure VPN manually.

IOS has a couple of disadvantages compared to Android – this is why we recommend you forget about Apple's marketing.... :

  • They impose many limitations on developers. For example, the OpenVPN protocol can' t be integrated into iOS apps offered by different VPN. Apps integrate default protocols of PPTP – L2TP – IPSec and IKEv2. For OpenVPN you need to

  • Different versions of iOS (and its frequent updates) mean develops limit their apps to older versions of iOS. Most need an iOS 8 even though 6 and 7 are still widely used! Finally, apps are optimised for certain versions of iphones (the sixth was the best!)

Here we listed some of the best VPN applications in iOS (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad), Android (smartphones and tablets)

IPVanish members have free access to iOS and Android apps

IPVanish iOS app Requires iOS 8.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5 and iPhone 6.
# Switch between VPN servers
# VPN protocol IKEv2 or IPSec
# Disconnect on sleep Indicates whether the VPN connection must be disconnected when the device goes to sleep or not
On demand Allows a VPN profile (IPSec VPN) to specify the conditions under which it will automatically connect: Networks + Domains
# Persistent Connection Thanks to IKEv2 and its MOBIKE option. This option will enable your VPN connection to keep running, without needing to reconnect each time you unlock your iPhone or iPad.

# User account details User account online + Support: sending a direct message from the app is efficient

IPVanish Android app
4.0.3 and up
VPN protocol OpenVPN
# Switch between VPN servers
# Ping Test to find the closest VPN server cluster to you
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by response time be default. You can also set it to sort by country

# Email ssupport Sending a direct message from the app is efficient

IPVanish Mobile App is one of the latest mobile security apps in the market today. Its development is particularly notable on iOS (a rare occurrence).

iOS 8 supports two major protocols: IPSec and IKEv2. It’s the first time that Apple offers IKEv2 protocol in its operating systems. This protocol is now supported by all major operating systems including Android, Windows Phone, Windows Desktop, Linux and now iOS and Mac.

The iOS app from IPVanish is the best of all the VPNs! It is the only one to offer anything other than the usual profiles with PPTP or L2TP!

It integrates the best protocol for mobility which is IKEv2 and uses the best – and most innovative - of Apple's functions which is the “VPN On Demand”.

Two advantages deserve to be used by everyone who wants a constantly secure connection:

  • "VPN on-Demand" aka "Automatic Connection" Set an automatic connection to the IPVanish VPN service while accessing public WiFi or similar networks (Starbucks /Airports etc. ) or when browser (or other apps) accesses a pre-defined domain (Facebook, Twitter etc.) - This function needs a few points explained: "VPN on demand" is a clever iOS feature that enables a VPN connection to be initiated without needing to go into settings or even leave the application you want to use. This feature is only available with certificate-based VPNs (IPSec). You are free to add your networks and/or domains. I really like the on demand feature of iOS because it works seamlessly.
  • "VPN always-on" Stay connected to IPVanish even if your device is in standby, locked screen mode, , disconnected from a network. As soon as the connection is re-established, your iphone/ipad reconnects automatically thanks to the IKEv2 protocol.

=> These are two different but complementary functions. "VPN Always-On" it is not an "on-demand VPN"

The iOS app from IPVanish is ideal for surfing from any WIFI connection securely, privately and anonymously

It offers the basics but works very well. You will find all the servers on OpenVPN. The app is fast, and doesn't use up too much power. And unlike its competition, IPVanish does not require any special permissions, which is great and very respectful of the user's confidentiality and personal data which many VPNs would love to access. (eg: Identity - Photos/Media/Files - Device ID & call information) or needs access to Identity Wi-Fi connection information

PureVPN members have free access to iOS and Android apps

PureVPN iOS app Requires iOS 6.1 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5
# Switch between VPN servers
# VPN protocol PPTP or L2TP or IKEv2 (iOS8 only)
# Search Countries Select a servers by country, or use the search function

PureVPN Android app
4.0.3 and up
VPN protocol OpenVPN
# Switch between VPN servers
# Port Type (TCP or UDP) on connection
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by response time be default. You can also set it to sort by country

# Filter by purpose Select your desired purpose (File Sharing- Hulu TV Watching - Poker - VoIP - Higher Security and Anonymity) and connect

Like IPVanish, PureVPN offers iOS and Android apps that work efficiently. Note that PureVPN offers a free version of this app (even if you aren't a customer). Free with 2GB data and limited to 3 countries: SE - USA - NL

Be careful: to connect with iOS you need your Login (email address) and Password for your client area to activate the app. After choosing your server you need to use your credentials (username, password for account details – sent by email when you signed up to PureVPN) to connect.

But with Android, you only need to enter your Username and Password for your account (sent by email when you signed up for PureVPN).

Like all apps on iOS you need to create a certificate, a profile via the VPN app (in several simple steps). Then go to the app settings to connect. None of the Android options like port UDP or TCP of your choice.

The real novelty of this app is the excellent IKEv2 protocol since Apple natively integrated it into iOS 8! To activate it you just need to Select "Auto protocol" to connect with "IKEv2 protocol"

IKEv2 protocol (added for iOS8) is the ideal protocol for iphone when you connect through wifi. Thanks to its Mobike option (aka VPN always-on) you stay connected to the VPN even if the internet disconnects and reconnects (through wifi or mobile 3G/4G networks). The other advantage is unlike PPTP/L2TP protocols, with IKEv2, iOS 8 users don’t need to navigate to settings to connect PureVPN.

Often VPN services struggle to integrate the excellent options developed for their VPN client software into their apps. Luckily PureVPN has managed to do so with the Purpose option (allows you to select a server for a particular use – activity). It is available both in its connection programme and now in the Android app.

Other options:

  • They let you choose between TCP or UDP ports but do not indicate the Ping of available servers.
  • You can select a servers by either browsing through the country, or use the search function. Add the first letters of a country to bring up possible options. Efficient since PureVPN has more than 80 countries!

The only flaw is the lack of IKEv2 protocol on Android (which is in fact available for iOS). No Android version natively supports IKEv2 yet. Unfortunately PureVPN will not work with StrongSwan VPN Client which lets you configure IKEv2/IPSEC on Android mobile

PIA members have free access to iOS and Android apps

Private Internet Access Android app
2.2 and up
# Switch between VPN servers
Auto connect to VPN on device boot
1-click connect Auto connect to VPN on start
Connection guard Manage programs to automatically close if VPN disconnected
Choice of Port Type TCP or UDP Connection Mode for Open VPN
Various VPN ports Remote port - Local port - Port Forwading
Advanced options encryption Ability to control the level of encryption (there is also the option of choosing no encryption)

It is a shame that there isn't an iOS app because the Android version is very good. Worth noting: Private Internet Access has been offering this app since Android 2.2 !

Not particularly stylized but you will have the same options (apart from the deactivation of IPv6 and DNS Leak protection) as with the Windows and Mac connection clients:

  • Port connection and forwarding options
    • Remote Port - Only change it if the network gets blocked. For example, use 443 via TCP in order to bypass firewalls
    • Local Port - The local port setting can be used when there is a firewall on your network blocking the VPN. Set a local port to be open in the firewall (a local port cannot be used to access your network from outside your local network), then set that local port in the PIA client, and it will sometimes allow you to connect when you could not before.
    • Port Forwading - Will allow incoming connections to your mobile device over an external port. It does reduc Privacy since you open a supplementary port, but it is essential if you use programmes for file sharing like uTorrent. The number of the port appears in the bottom left of the app when the connection is established.
  • Internet kill switch - Essential to protect the IP of your ISP. When activated the Client will not allow unencrypted internet traffic after being connected
  • Advanced options: You can choose your type and level of encryption. Generally speaking, the stronger the encryption, the slower it will make your connection.
    • Data Encryption: AES-128 or AES-256 or Blowfish or None
    • Data Authentification: SHA1 or SHA256 or None
    • Handshake: RSA-2048 or RSA-3072 or RSA-4096 or ECC-256k1 or ECC-256r1 or ECC-521

Private Internet Access is the only VPN to try to offer content and options for its app. As well as all the servers, you have best of all an app that secures your mobile device.

IbVPN members have free access to iOS and Android apps

IbVPN iOS app Requires iOS 6.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5
# Switch between VPN servers
# VPN protocol PPTP or L2TP
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by country

IbVPN Android app
4.0 and up
VPN protocol OpenVPN
# Switch between VPN servers
# Port Type (TCP or UDP) on connection
Port Number Use defaut (1195) for best performance. Try 55000 to 65000 ports if default is blocked
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by country.

# P2P server All P2P servers are labeled starting with "P2P"
# IbDNS IbDNS in addition to IbVPN (Beta Test). Comme with the windows program that does IbVPN and IbDNS with a touch of a button

IbVPN offers apps for iOS and Android (as well as manual configurations with the official OpenVPN app) which are easy to use to unblock your favorite websites, keeps your wireless (WiFi) hotspot protected, enjoy torrenting and P2P sharing (allowed on CA, RU, SE, HK, NL, LT and LU Servers), ....

These apps include 24 countries and have a free trial of 14 days with 4 countries (US, UK, Netherlands and Hong Kong) and no limit on data.

Watch out: The Android app needs your Client area password (the one you use to login on our website), not your VPN password (The Windows All in One VPN client is configured to accept both passwords).

IbVPN does have a slight difference when it comes to creating profiles for servers. Like all its competitors IbVPN allows users to create a connection profile (Certificate) when you select a server. But also to create at once all the profiles for all 24 countries (in PPTP and L2TP) by clocking on the tab "VPN Setup" and then on Start Auto Setup.

The app is simple and efficient. You have the entirety of the servers (by country and location) and as with the all-in-one Windows app the servers supporting P2P are marked. For each server you have the choice between TCP or UDP and even the option of changing the port number (by default 1195).

The more curious among you will notice that IbDNS is integrated (in beta test) for the USA => right at the bottom of the list of servers is marked: ibDNS US ~

HideMyAss members have free access to iOS and Android apps

HideMyAss iOS app Requires iOS 6.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
# VPN protocol PPTP or L2TP
Switch between VPN servers

HideMyAss Android app
4.0 and up
VPN protocol OpenVPN
# Switch between VPN servers
# Change IP Address Change your IP while staying connected to the same country
# Verify IP Address to confirm that the rest of the internet only sees your new IP address
# Auto connect to VPN on device boot
# Launch app on startup

The Android version is much more powerful than the iOS and has more options.

On iOS you need to create a profile which will automatically configure the VPN on your iphone. (Settings => General = > VPN)

You can find all of HideMyAss' servers, two protocols (PPTP – L2TP). Besides the restrictions imposed by iOS, HideMyAss has made a successful app, which will guide you smoothly through the steps to create a profile. There is even a tutorial for help. It is annoying though to have to create a new profile when you change servers. Actually, iOS only accepts one profile at a time (via HideMyAss) in its settings!

Before, only the iOS app was available. Now you can find all 193 countries on OpenVPN from HideMyAss on your tablet or mobile that uses Android.

To do so, download it on Google Play then install the Hidemyass Appli Android (also available through your HMA! user space)

This app was well conceived and promises a good service. But it could still be improved: Choice of UDP or TCP ports, other options (eg: The HMA Pro VPN Client let you change your IP address automatically). If the app reflected the wide range of options in the Windows connection client then it would be extremely successful

Proxy.SH members have free access to iOS and Android apps

Proxy.SH iOS app Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5
# Switch between VPN servers
# VPN protocol PPTP or L2TP
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by country - You can display all individual nodes

# Panel Votre espace utilisateur via l' App est le même que celui auquel vous accédez depuis d' autres OS

Proxy.SH Android app
4.0 and up
# Panel Your user space through the app is the same as the one you access from other OS.
VPN protocol OpenVPN
# Switch between VPN servers
# Port Type (TCP or UDP) on connection
Port Number Select desired Port. TCP (80-110-443-843) or UDP (53-1194-1443-8080-9201)
# Sort by country The server list is sorted by country - You can display all individual nodes

# Disable ping to save bandwidth Will help to reduce lag ?
# Reconnect when openvpn disconnects Auto-reconnect if your connection drops
# Kill internet when vpn disconnects If selected, it will instantly kill your internet connection in the event of an unexpected disconnect from the VPN server. This means that your true IP address will never be accidentally exposed to a website or torrent swarm if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.

Proxy.SH offers its customized VPN client "SafeJumper" as both Android and iOS apps (Iphone - Ipad)

As for all VPN providers, Proxy.SH is limited by Apple in its app development. This is why you will find PPTP and L2TP protocols with profile creation.

  • By country
  • By Fastest node
  • By All locations/tunnels

The inquisitive among you will see the option “Connect On Demand” which in theory means you launch the VPN when your browser (safari – opera – ... ) or an app connects to a network. I say in theory since on my iphone (iOS 6) this option was absent. Even though I asked for help I never learned which OS made this option possible.

However I tried the option "Connect on-demand" via the Onavo app that has it too.

With this free VPN the option works quite well. If activated, your VPN launches as soon as your iphone (or ipad) joins a network through an app or browser. (To disable this option, go to Settings > VPN > Select Onavo in the list, and toggle OFF ‘Connect On Demand’)

With Android, Proxy.SH shows a bit more originality. Each server offers connection options with different ports in TCP and UDP.

What's more Proxy.SH have made more of an effort to satisfy their users on Android app. So you will find essential options like:

  • "Reconnect when openvpn disconnects"
  • "Kill internet when vpn disconnects"

When using them, the Proxy.SH apps suffer from the same flaws we originally found with this VPN: difficult to connect to servers, no tech support when we asked for technical help, and the “Connect On Demand” iOS option was not properly exploited.
