Probably one of the most important ones aside from the VPN begin connected. A DNS leak happens when your request to a primary DNS happens outside the VPN. In this case your ISP knows what site you want to visit. Click TEST and see if your connection is safe

The Best No-log VPNs

LOGS and their preservation are an essential element to VPN, a major factor when choosing your VPN service. A VPN connection offers secure access to the internet and renders you « anonymous » on the internet thanks to an IP address that is not registered to your home, but to your VPN provider. A NO-LOG guarantee means that the VPN promises to keep no records what you are doing online.

But you need to remember that VPN providers are also businesses with legal obligations which provide an online service in exchange for compensation. Which means that a VPN service may eventually keep a record of its connections, or Logs. There are so many VPNs claiming to be “no logs” but there are also a few no logs VPNs that have been tested and proven to be truly no logs. While many VPNs nowadays claim to delete data logs, recent cases show that not all of them do. The only way to know for sure if a VPN service is honest about it's logging policy is when it proves those claims in court. This is the only way you can really verify if a VPN is delivering on its promise.

Note: If you genuinely want your VPN usage to be private, you will need to make payment by a crypto-currency such as Bitcoin.

LOGS are data concerning your activity. There are two types:

  • User Activity or Activity Logs. Also called monitoring, it means keeping data linked to your activities (searches, pages visited). To my knowledge, no VPN actually does this. As VPNs are all about privacy and security. A VPN provider that records this information isn’t doing its job and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Session Data or Connection Logs: total bytes transferred per session (data usage totals), source IPs and timestamps (connection start/end time). These logs are necessary from a technical point of view, for eventual help (Support). These LOGS link your personal IP and the one used by the VPN. When VPNs talk about NO LOGS, they are referring to this kind.

LOGS depend on 3 things:

  • VPN Provider Jurisdiction. Make sure to choose a VPN provider that is based  in safe countries with no data retention. e.g. there are no data retention requirements in the US.
    • Should I use a VPN based outside the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes and 14 Eyes list (United States - United Kingdom - Australia - New Zealand - Canada - Denmark - France - Netherlands - Norway - Germany - Italy - Belgium - Sweden - Spain) ? - The mystery regarding five eyes, nine eyes and 14 eyes when choosing a VPN is getting curious (No matter where you’re located - or where your VPN is located, for that matter - Big Brother’s “Eyes” are always watching). When choosing a VPN service, it is important that it has a strict zero log policy, the VPN Provider doesn’t retain any kind of activity logs. Private Internet Access offers great service and is also based in one of the ”Eye countries”!. Even if a provider is located in any of these nations but it doesn’t keep any logs then users have nothing to worry about.
  • VPN Server Juridiction. The choice of server location is particularly important because legislation can apply to both the business HQ and the servers. Regardless of your thoughts on the merits of location of the VPN provider the importance should be stressed on the location of the VPN server. I typically prefer to connect in the middle of nowhere (non-14 eyes countries) with no data retention. e.g. Romania - Panama
  • if VPN provider doesn't log it doesn't mean that the data center they use may not. Almost all VPN companies rent servers from third-party server providers. So even if the VPN provider keeps no logs, it is likely that the server centers in which the VPN servers are located, do. Unlike VPN companies, server centers have no obligation to protect users’ privacy. These are essential questions: How trustworthy local datacenters are? Does the datacenter you use log? These questions were raised at the EarthVPN affair: they defended their keeping of LOGS when one of their users was arrested after the police finds logs. For EarthVPN the Hosting provider (Data center) was keeping IP transfer logs to protect against Distributed Denial Of Service attacks and these were the ones that were used!

12 Best No Logs VPN Providers

Strict “No Logging” VPN

Private Internet Access keeps no logs and it's consistently proven its commitment to keeping zero logs.

  • Private Internet Access is located in the USA. Although some people believe otherwise, the USA does not have any laws for the preservation of data. Which means the many VPNs situated in the USA can be NO LOGS and still respect the law. However the government may obtain (Stored Communications Act ) from service providers to preserve (without disclosing) for a limited period of time, any data which already exists within their network architecture and which relates to a specific investigation. The law requires preservation for 90 days, renewable for another 90 day period.
  • Safe servers locations: Finland - Switzerland - Austria - Czech Republic - Luxembourg - Ireland - Romania - Hungary - Poland - Mexico - India
  • Private Internet Access keeps no logs (No Traffic or Request logs - PIA absolutely does not keep any logs, of any kind, period)
  • Verified no logs claims: Private Internet Access is no logs claims have been proven in two separate court cases, one in 2016 and another in 2018. Based on these two court cases, Private Internet Access is indeed a no logs VPN provider.
  • Is Private Internet Access located in a 14 Eyes Country? - Yes, Private Internet Access is located in the USA which is a 5 Eyes country. But Private Internet Access isn't concerned about being located in a Fourteen Eyes Country: PIA keeps no logs. Even if a provider is located in any of these nations but it doesn’t keep any logs then users have nothing to worry about.
BEST LOGLESS VPN: Private Internet Access is our top choice.

Strict “No Logging” VPN

  • NordVPN has always claimed to be a no logs VPN service: "We do not store connection time stamps, session information, used bandwidth, traffic logs, IP addresses or other data."
  • NordVPN has no logs claim investigated by a reputable “Big 4” accounting firm. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) concludes that NordVPN’s description of their no-logging policy is fair and accurate.
NordVPN is one of the few VPN services that has been verified to be truly no logs.
Strict “No Logging” VPN

ExpressVPN is another service that puts user privacy at the forefront.

  • ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands (out of 5eyes), an offshore jurisdiction with strong privacy legislation and no data retention requirements.
  • Safe servers locations: Argentina - Bahamas - Brazil - Chile - Colombia - Costa Rica - Mexico - Panama - Albania - Austria - Bulgaria - Croatia - Cyprus - Czech Republic - Finland - Greece - Hungary - Iceland - Romania - Thailand - Malaysia - Algeria - Kenya
  • ExpressVPN has an extremely clear Privacy Policy on the subject – all set out in black and white. We do not collect logs of your activity, including no logging of browsing history, traffic destination, data content, or DNS queries. We also never store connection logs, meaning no logs of your IP address, your outgoing VPN IP address, connection timestamp, or session duration.
  • ExpressVPN is truly a no logs VPN provider. In 2017, Turkish authorities seized a server by ExpressVPN for an investigation but found no data.
The favorable location, plus the non-collection of any information that could link users to their respective online activity, result in ExpressVPN being one of the most dependable services you can use.

Strict “No Logging” VPN

Perfect Privacy is a Switzerland-based VPN that offers advanced online anonymity and security features. Perfect Privacy has the usual No logs policy. Perfect-Privacy announces it clearly:

  • Swiss Jurisdiction. Switzerland is generally accepted as having a high standard of freedom of speech.
  • Safe servers locations: Czech Republic - Egypt - Hong Kong - Iceland - Latvia- Luxembourg - Romania
  • Perfect-Privacy announces it clearly: "No logging of any user specific data or activity. No data is kept."
  • Perfect Privacy also uses a warrant canary
  • Strict “No Logging” VPN: In 2016 the Rotterdam police seized 2 of Perfect-Privacys servers. No logs were obtained. Authorities in Rotterdam, Netherlands were attempting to obtain customer data and seized one of Perfect Privacy’s servers. They were not able to obtain any information and customer data remained secure.
Perfect Privacy is one of the most established VPN providers in the industry.

Strict “No Logging” VPN

AirVPN is an Italy-based VPN service. On 8 November 2017, the Italian Parliament approved a Regulation on data retention that allows telecommunication operators to save telephone and internet data for up to six years. According to the Court of Justice of the European Union, this law is unlawful and illegal due to the extremely long mandatory data retention period. And as far as I can tell Italy, where AirVPN is based, does not require VPN providers to log anything under the DRD.

  • AirVPN is up-front about its no-logging policy, stating clearly that it doesn't monitor or track any of your online activities.: "No monitoring nor logging of your online activities. "
  • Safe servers locations: Austria - Bulgaria - Czech Republic - Hong Kong - Latvia - Lithuania - Romania - Switzerland - Ukraine
  • The company also states that it complies with European Union privacy directives (Directives 95/46/EC - 2002/58/EC -  the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679), and any servers located outside the EU will treat your data with the same or higher levels of privacy and data protection.
  • AirVPN is located in Italy, which is part of the 14 Eyes, a group of 14 countries that share information and spy on each other. But AirVPN isn't concerned about being located in a Fourteen Eyes Country: AirVPN adheres to a strict no-logs policy and is transparent about it.
  • To ensure genuine NO LOGS use the option VPN over TOR. AirVPN is one of the VPNs that allows you to route their VPN over Tor if you want to keep your true IP hidden from the AirVPN server.
We like AirVPN’s transparent policies, including its commitment to absolutely no monitoring or logging of user activities.

In 2017, IPVanish has been acquired by StackPath. StackPath has assured users that IPVanish stands by its existing no-logs policy: "IPVanish does not, has not, and will not log or store logs of our users’ activity as a StackPath company". We don’t have any reason to believe otherwise.

  • IPVanish is headquartered in the US and thus operates under US law. The United States (One of the few countries without a mandatory data retention law) currently has no mandatory data retention law.
  • Safe servers locations: Albania - Austria - Bulgaria - Croatia - Cyprus - Czech Republic - Estonia - Finland - Greece - Hungary - Iceland - Ireland - Latvia - Luxembourg - Moldova - Poland - Portugal - Romania - Serbia - Slovakia - Slovenia - Switzerland - Costa Rica - Mexico - Brazil - Hong Kong - India - Malaysia - Philippines
  • IPVanish is located in a Five Eyes-friendly jurisdiction but the truth is that the US has no mandatory data retention law and IPVanish adheres to a strict no-logs policy.
  • IPVanish has a no-log policy: "IPVanish does not collect, monitor, or log any traffic or use of its Virtual Private Network service, under any circumstances, on any platform."
  • IPVanish controls the chain of LOGS. They are in charge of their privacy policy because IPVanish is a Tier-1 VPN (they have their own servers - at least the most popular ones). It is rare for VPN providers to own their own network, creating an enormous advantage. Unlike other VPNs that have to go through Data Centers that can keep their own LOGS.
  • It’s also worth noting that ever since StackPack took over the management, IPVanish has been away from any privacy-related scandals.

TorGuard is a strict no log VPN, which means they don’t collect ANY logs on  your VPN usage

  • TorGuard is very clear about its logging policy: "TorGuard does not collect or log any data from its Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Proxy services"
  • TorGuard is based within the US. The US doesn’t currently have any mandatory data retention laws, meaning they can demand only the data that the company records and stores.
  • Based in 5 Eyes? -  But TorGuard isn't concerned about being located in a 5 Eyes country. TorGuard doesn’t collect logs, so they can’t reveal any information about what you did while on their servers.
  • Safe servers locations: Brazil - Chile - Costa Rica - Mexico - Austria - Cyprus - Czech Republic - Denmark - Iceland - Romania - Sweden - Luxembourg - Netherlands

LiquidVPN is a solid option for privacy-conscious users

  • LiquidVPN is a VPN provider that has been operating from its base in the US since 2013. There are no data retention laws in the US that pertain to VPNs.
  • Safe servers locations: Romania - Switzerland
  • LiquidVPN seems to be really invested in NO LOGS: "We do not maintain any logs on users activity, timestamps, or amount of data transferred."
  • LiquidVPN is located in a Five Eyes-friendly jurisdiction. But LiquidVPN isn't concerned about being located in a Five Eyes Country: LiquidVPN maintains 0 logs. Which means no time stamps, IP’s or Usernames are logged after you disconnect all traces of you are gone.
  • Their site has a series of tools that resolve the legal problem:
Great privacy features and keeps no logs.

Proxy.sh is a true non-logging VPN which means that they don’t monitor or log any VPN activity, session data, or metadata.

  • Proxy.sh is a Seychelles based VPN service provider, which is considered one of the best countries in regards to protecting online privacy
  • Safe servers locations: Austria - Brazil - Bulgaria - Chile - Costa Rica - Czech Republic - Estonia - Finland - Hong Kong - Hungary - Iceland - India - Ireland - Lithuania - Luxembourg - Panama - Poland - Romania - Slovakia - Slovenia - Switzerland - Thailand - Ukraine - Vietnam
  • Proxy.SH maintains a 100% no usage log policy to protect the privacy of their users: "We do not keep any logs internally. Nothing gets logged."
  • Nevertheless, there are ethical limits: "When we receive an abuse notice about a critical issue, we will take the decision to forward the notice to legitimate authorities". Proxy.sh is at least honest about its strengths and weaknesses.
Proxy.sh does everything it can to hold no data that could compromise the privacy and anonymity of its users.

IbVPN is one of the few Romanian VPN service providers that does not keep any logs

  • IbVPN is a no logs Romanian VPN provider. Romania appears to be a solid jurisdiction when it comes to privacy: Data retention being officially declared unconstitutional by the Romania Constitutional Court in 2014.
  • Safe servers locations: Switzerland - Austria - Bulgaria - Czech Republic - Hungary - Iceland - Ireland - Romania - Finland - Poland - Slovenia - Estonia - Mexico - Panama - Brazil - Chile - Colombia - Argentina - Indonesia - Malaysia - Taiwan - India
  • Romania is also comfortably outside the direct area of influence of the Fourteen Eyes (Nine Eyes + Germany, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Spain)
  • IbVPN does not collect any traffic data: "ibVPN does not collect or log any traffic or use of its Virtual Private Network service.". ibVPN is a 100% NO logs VPN.

StrongVPN claims a strict no-logging policy.

  • StrongVPN is a United States-based provider of VPN services. The US still doesn’t have any mandatory data retention laws, so theoretically, a VPN company that doesn’t keep any user logs wouldn’t have any data to hand over even if ordered to do so.
  • Safe servers locations: Hong Kong - Romania - Malaysia - Mexico - Philippines - Brazil - Latvia - Czech Republic - Switzerland - Luxembourg
  • StrongVPN says it does not store any traffic or connection logs of any kind: "We are a zero-logging VPN service, meaning we’ll never track or store your data while connected to our VPN service."
  • StrongVPN owns its own servers. This gives them maximum control over who can access the information on servers.
  • StrongVPN is located in a Five Eyes-friendly jurisdiction. But StrongVPN isn't concerned about being located in a Five Eyes Country because StrongVPN is a service that advertises a strong no logs policy.

  • PureVPN is based in Hong Kong which has no data retention laws. PureVPN is headquartered outside of the the 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes.
  • PureVPN sparked controversy in the past when it revealed a user’s IP address to help with an FBI cyberstalking investigation. This recent controversy led PureVPN to change the language from the promised “zero logging policy” to “no browsing logs”. Their updated Privacy Policy clearly states that:

“We DO NOT keep any record of your browsing activities, connection logs, records of the VPN IPs assigned to you, your original IPs, your connection time, the history of your browsing, the sites you visited, your outgoing traffic, the content or data you accessed, or the DNS queries generated by you.”

  • The only information kept is the details you provide, such as name, payment method, and address. They also track the amount of bandwidth you use, the date you connected to a VPN server and your ISP (connection logs).
  • Safe servers locations: Czech Republic - Egypt - Hong Kong - Iceland - Latvia- Luxembourg - Romania
